Spotlight Series: The Coatesville Area Public Library and Community Initiatives

Jun 7, 2024 | Coatesville

The Coatesville Area Public Library, located at 501 E. Lincoln Hwy, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a series of special events and initiatives designed to engage the community and support local businesses. “In the 21st century, while information availability is abundant, we need a place to collect accurate information, connect to others, and collaborate with our community. The Coatesville Area Public Library is that place,” states Former Director, Penny Williams.

Among the highlights is the “Tour of Coatesville,” an innovative program aimed at boosting visibility for local businesses while garnering support for the library. The “Tour of Coatesville” is an exciting initiative where local businesses partner with the library to enhance their visibility and support the library’s mission. The program offers multiple support options, including fundraising days, program partnerships, and donations of items, funds, or time. Additionally, local online businesses can contribute by offering coupon codes. This initiative aims to build a stronger, more connected Coatesville community.

The library’s flexible support models ensure there is no one way to donate, welcoming all forms of support. This inclusive approach allows businesses and individuals to contribute in ways that best suit their capabilities, thereby fostering a culture of community and mutual aid.

Oral History of Coatesville: A Journey Through Time

In addition to the “Tour of Coatesville,” the library has launched a video series titled “An Oral History of Coatesville.” Originally created in the 1990s, this project features interviews with prominent local residents about the history of Coatesville. The series, initially recorded on VHS, was later converted to DVD by Coatesville Area Senior High (CASH) students in the 2000s.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary, the library has digitized these discs and uploaded them to their YouTube channel. This effort not only preserves valuable historical information but also makes it more accessible to the public. The first episode, released last Friday, features an interview with Dr. Giammarino, a former Library Board member and Rotary Club member who lived next door to the library for over 50 years. You can watch it on the library’s YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/@coatesvilleareapubliclibrary.
