Highlighting Positive Community News and Stories from the Greater Coatesville Area

Spotlight Series: David Phillips

May 31, 2024 | Coatesville

David Phillips, the owner of Family First Painting, has a remarkable story of resilience, determination, and community service. After facing years of failed jobs and searching for a purpose in life, David started his painting business in June 2014 with just $150. He named his venture Family First, reflecting his core values and dedication to serving families.

David’s journey to entrepreneurship wasn’t easy. As an ex-con and a military veteran without an honorable discharge, job opportunities were scarce. Yet, within the first year, Family First Painting grossed over $75,000, surpassing the income of any job he could find. This success allowed him to hire five employees and open an office in the Midway Arts building, doubling his revenue consistently.

Community Engagement and Support

David’s true mission in life is helping people, especially children and his community. Over the years, he has initiated and supported numerous community projects:

  • Educational Trips: David organized a trip for 11 city kids to the African American Museum in Washington, D.C., including a tour of Howard University and a visit to The Sankofa Bookstore, where the children received free books and lunch.
  • Mentorship: Alongside his wife, David became a mentor and contributor to the Bridge Academy. He also participated in the Ways of a Gentlemen program with Josh Crans.
  • Feeding the Homeless: For the past nine years, David and his team have provided Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless at City Gate.
  • Business Development: David helps aspiring entrepreneurs start their own businesses through advice and financial support.

Supporting Local Initiatives

David’s contributions to the community extend to various programs, including Hoop Dreams Summer League basketball, H.E.R. mentoring program, and Bring Back Brotherhood. His commitment to Coatesville is evident, as he has supported nearly every local business in the area.

A Legacy of Giving Back

David Phillips embodies the spirit of giving back. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact one person can have on their community. Through Family First Painting, David continues to uplift and inspire others, ensuring that everyone understands their value and potential.
