Highlighting Positive Community News and Stories from the Greater Coatesville Area

Spotlight Series: Ben Yocum

May 24, 2024 | Coatesville, Downtown

In Coatesville, a wave of innovation and creativity is sweeping through the city, thanks to a dedicated community leader and Penn State graduate, Ben Yocum. With a foundation in film and television, complemented by a background in theater, Ben has evolved from a Global Content Creator at QVC into a key player within Coatesville’s creative community.

The Birth of the Creative Club

The idea for The Creative Club began in 2017, but it was the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic that truly galvanized Ben’s efforts. Partnering with CJ Witherspoon and SCORE for experience and business guidance, while leveraging the new revitalization of the Midway Arts building and Coatesville, they established a non-profit in December 2021. The Club’s mission: to build a community of content creators and support local businesses through educational initiatives and hands-on virtual reality training on the technology side of things. Recognizing a gap in S.T.E.A.M programs within Coatesville, Ben and his team set out to fill this void. The Creative Club of Chester County offers after-school programs and summer camps designed to introduce students to the world of VR, 3D printing, filmmaking, computer programming, podcasting, coding, Esports, and beyond. These initiatives are aimed at providing essential tech skills and job training for the youth, with the added benefit of potential job placements through partnerships within family owned and corporate businesses within Chester County.

Summer Camp and Community Involvement

This July, the Creative Club will host its third annual VR summer camp, the only one of its kind in Pennsylvania. Open to students from kindergarten to 7th grade, the camp offers a unique blend of STEM education and creative arts, all at no cost to the participants from the 19320GO zip code, thanks to generous sponsorships. The program not only teaches kids about VR and other technologies but also provides them with opportunities for hands-on learning, training, and job readiness. The success of these programs hinges on community support. More partnerships and sponsorships are needed to continue providing these invaluable resources for free. The Creative Club of Chester County emphasizes the importance of connecting with leaders and investors to secure the necessary partnership funding and equipment to expand the club’s reach and impact. Ben’s main goal for C4 is to support and mentor young creators, helping them overcome obstacles and educate them through innovation and guidance. By offering content creation advice, hands-on experience, headshots, and a platform for learning, the club aims to become a cornerstone for Coatesville’s creative and tech-savvy youth.

Empowering the Next Generation

In a city eager for growth and development, Ben Yocum stands as a beacon of inspiration. Through his efforts, Coatesville’s youth are not only learning essential skills but also gaining the confidence and support they need to dream big and achieve their goals. As the Creative Club continues to grow, so too does the potential for a brighter, more innovative future for all of the city of Coatesville.
