HAIR Program by Community Care Behavioral Health in Coatesville

Sep 28, 2023 | Coatesville

Community Care Behavioral Health’s HAIR (Health Access Initiative for Recovery) program is making a positive impact in Coatesville, thanks to a partnership with The Alliance for Health Equity, as reported by Denise Bonura for Pittsburgh Magazine. This innovative initiative trains stylists and barbers to expand their skill set, becoming certified wellness ambassadors. In doing so, they create a safe and welcoming environment for people of color to address their behavioral health concerns and discover available resources.

Certified Wellness Ambassadors for HAIR

As part of the HAIR program, stylists and barbers undergo specialized training to become certified wellness ambassadors. This unique role enables them to recognize signs of behavioral health disorders, including depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use disorders, and suicide. By doing so, they play a crucial role in connecting individuals with the help they may require.

Meeting People Where They’re Comfortable

Lori Weems, the director of the HAIR program, emphasizes the importance of meeting individuals where they feel comfortable. This initiative goes beyond traditional hairstyling; it’s about addressing the broader well-being of the community. By providing a comfortable space for open discussions, the program aims to tackle issues that may not be easily addressed elsewhere.

Breaking Stigmas and Building Trust

Weems acknowledges the challenges of addressing behavioral health issues within the community. Stigmas, distrust, racism, and trauma can be significant barriers to seeking help. The HAIR program acknowledges these challenges and strives to normalize discussions around mental health. It’s a gradual process that involves planting seeds of awareness and trust.
