Community Service Center in Coatesville Provides Housing for Homeless

Jan 12, 2024 | Coatesville

To honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., numerous volunteers from W.C. Atkinson Memorial Community Service Center in Coatesville, along with members of the community, are refurbishing a duplex home to provide housing for three men currently experiencing homelessness, as reported by Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.

The community center already operates a shelter capable of accommodating up to 22 homeless men, embodying its motto, “A Place Men Can Call Home.” Presently, volunteers are diligently working to expand housing capacity by renovating a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom living unit in the heart of Coatesville. Upon completion, the renovated house will serve as a residence for three employed men actively seeking permanent housing.

This initiative is a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and his “Poor Peoples Campaign.” The renovation project is anticipated to span two weeks, with a targeted completion date of January 15, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Atkinson Shelter Coordinator Andrew McNeil Jr. expressed, “We are paying homage to that dream to have it completed on his birthday. To witness someone move into the house after its completion will mark a successful conclusion.”
