Coatesville School Board Accepts New Grant

Oct 10, 2023 | Coatesville

At its Sept. 26 meeting, the Coatesville Area School Board voted to accept a CCRES Educational and Behavioral Health Sciences grant in the amount of $8,065 to be used by the district’s athletics and activities office. The Coatesville School Board accepts this grant in hopes to assist in funding summer program positions. This is the third year for the grant to assist with programs for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Also during the meeting, Principal Maria Stauffer led a presentation about the Zones of Regulation Program at Rainbow Elementary School. This is a schoolwide social and emotional learning curriculum that teaches students self-regulation. It aims to give them ways to manage their thoughts, feelings and actions through healthy coping and regulation strategies.

The program describes four zones — blue, which is sad or sick; green, which is good to go, happy, calm and focused; yellow, which is high energy, frustration, worry, surprise, or silly and not focused; and red, which is the zone for extreme feelings of anger, aggression, terror or elation and the feeling of being out of control.

Students learn that no zone is bad and it is OK to talk about the emotions they are feeling. Once they identify the zone they are in, they can use calming techniques to regulate themselves and get back to green.

At the next board and committee meetings Oct. 10, there will be a presentation from the technology department and an update on the district’s master facilities plan.
