Coatesville Horologist: Living Encyclopedia of Watch Manufacturers

Dec 22, 2023 | Coatesville

George Morrison, who has been repairing watches and clocks at his studio near Coatesville for more than two decades, is a living encyclopedia of watch manufacturers, writes Roger Morris for The Hunt Magazine

The horologist said that most of his customers inherit the watches they bring to him for repairs.

If the watches no longer work, “they write them off and set them aside, but they seldom throw them away,” he said. “Then they suddenly get interested and are often surprised that I can fix them.”

Morrison knows the most about American watch companies that have often been sold, mostly to Swiss companies.

“I see a lot of Hamiltons, partly because they were once made in Lancaster,” he said. “Waltham and Elgin are also popular models. I also see Longines and Bulovas and have a lot of parts for them.”

Morrison opted to attend a watch school because he wanted to know how his pocket watch worked.

“I joined the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors and decided to take a class,” he said. “That’s when I knew what I wanted to do — repair watches.”
