Coatesville Elementary Schools to Receive Funding for Fruits and Vegetables

Sep 8, 2023 | Coatesville

COATESVILLE, PA — State Rep. Dan Williams, D-Chester, is applauding this week’s announcement that five Coatesville Area School District elementary schools will receive funding to provide students with fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day.

The awards were announced Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Kings Highway Elementary School will get $32,980 from the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Rainbow Elementary will receive $45,764 and Caln Elementary will get $33,480.

In addition, Reeceville and East Fallowfield – schools that 74th District students attend but are outside of the district’s border – will receive $23,976 and $23,760, respectively.

“Bad eating habits can begin at a young age,” Williams said. “This funding will help our youth develop healthy eating habits by providing them with nutritious food throughout the day.”

Under the program, schools receive reimbursement for the cost of making free fresh fruits and vegetables available to students during the school day. They must be provided separately from the lunch or breakfast meal, in multiple areas of the school during the school day.
